My Favorite Documentary Films - 2015 to 2020

Greetings documentary film buffs and welcome to 'My Favorite Documentary Films from 2015 to 2020'.  Being the avid film fan that I am and always have been, I'll be adding eclectic discoveries as I go along so stay tuned.  If you're looking for off-the wall, weird and wonderful docs of all genres, styles and subjects, you've come to the right place.  My TV is always on!  Many of these films can be sourced online or at your local public library.  



 



London - Art in the 21st Century (2020) – How British history and modern upheaval collide in the works of today’s London artists.

Lucy Worsley’s Royal Myths & Secrets - Marie Antoinette the Doomed Queen (2020)  – Why Marie Antoinette is often called blamed for causing the French Revolution.

Secrets of the Dead – Viking Warrior Queen (2020) – Join a team of archaeologists as they examine one of the most significant Viking graves.

Prince Albert – A look at the role that Prince Albert played in shaping Victorian Britain.  Professor Saul David looks into his influences and innovative ideas.

The Virus - What Went Wrong? (2020) – As COVID-19 spread from Asia to the Middle East and to Europe, the U.S. struggled to prepare.  For Frontline.

The Windermere Children:  In Their Own Words (2020) Thomas Kretschmann and Romola Garai.  The story of the pioneering project to rehabilitate child survivors of the Holocaust on the shores of Lake Windermere.

INX Live Baby Live (2019) A stunning concert from London’s Wembley Stadium.  The concert captures the Australian rockers. 

Martin Clune’s Wild Life (2012) – On the hit series Doc Martin, Martin Clunes unapproachable – and sometimes downright unlikable – character hates dogs, but the actor himself has an abiding love for animals. In these five charming documentaries, he shares his fascination with all kinds of creatures – from man’s best friend to the elusive manta ray.  An affable and curious host, Clunes travels from his own Dorset farm to far-flung locales, including Madagascar and Kenya.

The Man Who Saved the World – The Astonishing True Story of Colonel Stanislav Petrov  (2014) - The Man Who Saved the World tells the gripping true story of Stanislav Petrov – a man, who in 1983 single-handedly averted a fullscale nuclear world war, but now struggles to get his life back on track…before it is too late.

Ancient Aliens - The Secrets of Stonehenge (2019)- A shocking DNA study released in 2018 reveals the original builders of Stonehenge.  

Ray Johnson – How to Draw a Bunny (2000) – ‘How to Draw a Bunny’ explores the fascinating, often hilarious, and always enigmatic world or artist and underground icon Ray Johnson.  A “Pop Art mystery movie, the film is framed by Johnson’s mysterious death on Friday, January 13, 1995, the puzzling circumstances of which left both his intimate admirers and the general public wondering if this was a ‘final performance’. 

The Circus – (2018) This four-hour miniseries tells the story of one of the most popular and influential forms of entertainment in American history.  Through the intertwined stories of several of the most innovative and influential impresarios of the late nineteenth century, this series reveals the circus was a uniquely American entertainment created by a rapidly expanding and industrializing nation.  ON PBS.


Edgar A. Poe: Buried Alive (2017) - The film draws on the rich palette of Poe’s evocative imagery and sharply drawn plots to tell the real story of the notorious author.

Ancient Aliens - The Reptilian Agenda (2019) – Serpent Gods are found in the religious traditions of Mesapotamia, Central and South America.

The UnXplained - Evil places (2019) – It is discussed whether there is such a thing as evil places where bad things seem to happen.  Narrated by William Shatner.

Ancient Aliens - The Druid Connection (2019) – Investigating if ancient Druids travelled to New England and New York’s Hudson Valley centuries ago.


Ancient Aliens (2019) – Eric Von Daniken’s book called ‘Chariots of the Gods’ states that aliens went to earth before.

Ancient Skies - Our Place in the Universe (2019) - A cast of scientific pioneers reshapes the solar system and understands a growing universe.  For NOVA.

Banksy Does New York (2014) - 80 mins.  On October 1, 2013, the elusive British street artist known as Banksy, launched a self-proclaimed month-long residency in New York City, posting one unique exhibit a day in an unannounced location, sparking a 31-day scavenger hunt both online and on the streets for Banksy's works.  

Cancer/Emperor of all Maladies - Finding the Achilles Heel (2015) - Conclusion.  Optimism that the mystery of the malignant cell has been solved fades due to the layers of complexity in defense of cancer leading many to focus on prevention and early detection.  However, the 2010 new avenues of attack are uncovered.

Wild Way of the Vikings (2019) – Go behind the scenes with the crew to find out more about the making of this epic film.  From capturing the behaviors of orcas to avoiding diving gannets, recreating the world of the Vikings was no easy task. 

The Rise of Rockets (2019) – The dawn of a new era of human activity in space for science, exploration and profit. For NOVA.

Margaret, The Rebel Princess (2019) - Learn how Princess Margaret's life and loves reflected the changing world.

Spaceman (2017) - B.C.'s Granger Taylor built a spaceship in his backyard.  In 1980, he said he was going to space and vanished.  What really happened?

Decoding the Pyramids (2019) - How did the ancient Egyptians build the Pyramids of Giza.  For NOVA.

Cancer/Emperor of all Maladies - Magic Bullets (2015) - The story of cancer and the efforts to find a cure begins with the work of cancer researcher Sydney Farber (1903 - 1973), who, in the last 1940s introduced the modern era of chemotherapy. 

Vanished (2019) - Ex-police detective Dave Paulides investigates extraordinary missing persons cases.  For The History Channel.

The First Face of America (2018) - The discovery of a 13,000 year-old skeleton in an underwater cave in Mexico follows the story of a girl who lived 13,000 years ago and what happened on the day she died.  For NOVA.

Diana - 7 Days (2017) - This landmark 90-minute BBC documentary tells the inside story of the tumultuous and unprecedented week that followed the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, exploring how she came to have such an extraordinary effect on the nation and people around the world.


Forged by the Gods (2017) - 60 mins.  A study of artificial metallic objects dating back hundreds of thousands of years including mysterious metal spheres that defy the laws of physics and an ancient wedge that has left historians baffled.  Ancient Aliens Season 12. 

The Akashic Records (2017) - 60 mins.  A look at brain waves during sleep meditation to observe the physical changes in the brain during a phenomena known as Akashic Records.  Ancient Aliens Season 12.

The Majestic 12 (2017) - 60 mins.  The study of a top secret within the U.S. government called the Majestic 12.  Scientists, government officials and military elite investigate reports of UFOs and supposedly examining crashed extra terrestrial craft.  Ancient Aliens Season 12.

UFO Conspiracy - Hunt for Truth (2017) - 120 mins.  Examining the long history of allegations involving alien phenomena and their supposed government cover-ups.  For the History Channel.

The Alien Architects (2017) - 60 mins.  A study of similar architectural marvels of the ancient world that bear striking similarities to one another, among them the pyramid complex in Giza, the Avenue of the dead pyramids in Mexico and an ancient pyramid temple in Cambodia.  Ancient Aliens Season 12.

The Mystery of Rudlowe Manor (2017) - 60 mins.  An exploration of the possibility that files related to the history of UFO phenomenon are locked up in a manor house in Wiltshire, England countryside.  Ancient Aliens Season 12.

Ferlinghetti – A Rebirth of Wonder (2010) – This incisive and entertaining portrait of American poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti explores his vital role as catalyst for numerous literary careers and for the Beat movement itself.  In 1953 Ferlinghetti opened City Lights Bookstore, which quickly evolved into an iconic institution symbolizing social change and literary freedom.  Continuing to thrive for over five decades, it is a cornerstone of America’s modern literary and cultural history.

Pluto and Beyond (2019) – The New Horizons spacecraft attempts to fly by NASA’s most distant target yet.  For NOVA.

The Rolling Stones Crossfire Hurricane (2012) – This superb new film tells the story of The Rolling Stones’ unparalleled journey from blues obsessed teenagers in the early sixties to their undisputed status as rock royalty.  All of The Rolling Stones have been newly interviewed and their words form the narrative arc that links together archive footage of performances, news coverage and interviews, much of it previously unseen.  Produced by Mick Jagger, Victoria Pearman, Charlie Watts and Keith Richards.

Brian Eno 1971-1977 - The Man Who Fell To Earth (2011) – This documentary film – the first ever about Eno – explores his life, career and music between the years 1971 and 1977, the period that some view as his golden age, others as just one era in a long, extraordinary and very eclectic career.

From the Vaults – Land of Opportunities (2019) – Canadian television was the land of opportunity for international recording artists.  This episode features stories and performances by Sammy Davis Jr., Joan Baez, Jackie Mittoo and several of the top blues musicians ever captured on film.


Love Thy Nature – (2014) – Narrated by Liam Neeson, “Love Thy Nature” points to how deeply we have lost touch with nature and takes viewers on a cinematic journey through the beauty and intimacy of our relationship with the natural world.

Still on the Run – The Jeff Beck Story (2018) - Jeff Beck is one of the most innovative and original guitar players of the rock ‘n roll era.  Never content to rest on his laurels, he is always experimenting with new techniques, new musical styles and new collaborators.  This film follows his career from early days learning guitar solos with his friend Jimmy Page, through the Yardbirds and the Jeff Beck Group and his multi-faceted solo albums.

An Inconvenient Sequel – Truth to Power (2017) – Ten years after the Academy Award Winning “An Inconvenient Truth” brought climate change to the forefront of mainstream culture, former Vice President Al Gore continues his tireless fight to educate the next generation of climate champions.  Eye-opening and alarming, this compelling follow-up shows that while the stakes have never been higher, the solutions to the climate crisis are still within our reach.

Flying Supersonic (2018) - The history of the Concorde, the passenger plane that flew at twice the speed of sound.  For NOVA.

Ancient Aliens - The Artificial Human (2018).  A look at whether or not intelligent robots are a threat to humanity or the next step in human evolution; as man and machine begin to merge, humanity could be fulfilling a destiny prepared for by aliens thousands of years ago.  

Plastic Paradise (2014) – Thousands of miles away from civilization, Midway Atoll is in one of the most remote places on earth.  And yet it has become ground zero for the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, siphoning plastics from three distant continents.  In this independent documentary, journalist/filmmaker Angela Sun travels on a personal journey of discovery to uncover this mysterious phenomenon.  Along the way she meets scientists, researchers, influencers and volunteers who shed light on the effects of our rabid plastic consumption and learns the problems is more insidious than we could have ever imagined.

CBGB (2013) – Alan Rickman stars as legendary NYC club owner Hilly Crystal who, during the 1970s, wanted to create a venue for country, bluegrass and blues music (thus the name CBGB). When those acts became difficult to book, he shifted the club’s focus to local bands playing original music, launching the careers of Patti Smith, Blondie, the Talking Heads and the Ramones and helping to define New York’s punk scene and change the face of music. 

The Rise and Fall of the Clash (2014) – The only up-close and personal film about the juggernaut band The Clash and their meteoric trajectory through rock ‘n’ roll history.  The film features previously unseen footage of the band at work and at play as well as interviews with the individual band members and with those who knew them well.

Steve Reich – Phase to Face - (2011).  A drummer-turned-composer, Steve Reich has produced some of the most vibrant, original and interesting music of our time, with influences as varied as Bach, Stravinsky, Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Balinese and Ghanaian percussion.  His technique of “phasing” (short repeating patterns moving in and out of phase with each other), used first in “It’s Gonna Rain” of 1965, formed the springboard for his complex and colorful style, with its intoxicating melodic lines and rhythmic patterns.

Dawn of Humanity (2015) – Deep in a South African cave, an astounding discovery reveals clues to what made us human.  For NOVA.

YERT (Your Environmental Road Trip) (2012) – 3 friends. 50 states. One wild year.  Called to action by a planet in peril, three friends hit the road – travelling America with hope, humor…and all of their garbage for the year-to explore the good, the bad and the weird across every state in search of the extraordinary innovators and courageous citizens who are tackling humanity’s greatest environmental crises. 

TINY (Story About Living Small) (2013) – From 1970 to 2010, the average size of a new house in America nearly doubled. Yet in recent years, many are redefining their American Dream to focus on flexibility, financial freedom and quality of life over quantity of space.  These self-proclaimed “Tiny Housers” live in homes smaller than the average parking space, often built on wheels to bypass building codes and zoning laws. Tiny takes us inside six of these homes stripped to their essentials, exploring the owners’ stories and the design innovations that make them work. 

The Pink Floyd & Syd Barrett Story (2001) – “The Pink Floyd & Syd Barrett Story” tells the full bizarre, tragic but also celebratory story of Syd Barrett with contributions from all the members of Pink Floyd plus friends, managers and lovers. Bonus material includes extended interviews with Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Richard Wright, Nick Mason and Robyn Hitchcock.

The Great Artists – The Post-Modernists (Gaugin) (2001) – Paul Gaugin was thirty five when he made the momentous decision to abandon his lucrative career as a Paris stockbroker and devote himself full time to painting.  Gaugin’s bold use of flat, unmixed color gave his paintings a strong sense of personal expression, but his work struggled to find acceptance at the time.

Loud QUIET loud – A Film About the Pixies (2006) – In the history of modern American music there are few bands like the Pixies.  Theirs was an unparalleled musical path, influencing countless others despite modest financial success.  In 1992, their chief songwriter and vocalist Black Francis announced his intention to quit via a blunt facsimile.  That, it seemed, was that.  But to the amazement of everyone, the Pixies reunited in 2004.  This film is the story of this unforeseen plot twist.

Obit - Life on Deadline (2017) – It’s a shame no one wants to talk to them at parties, because obituary writers are a surprisingly funny bunch.  Ten hours before newspapers hit neighborhood doorsteps –-and these days ten minutes before news hits the web—an obit writer is racing against deadline to sum up a long and newsworthy life in under 1000 words.

Feeding Frenzy – The Food Industry, Marketing & the Creation of a Health Crisis (2013) – Over the past 3 decades, obesity rates in the U.S. have more than doubled for children and tripled for adolescents – and a startling 70% of adults are now obese or overweight.  The result has been a widening epidemic of obesity-related health problems.

Left Behind Without a Choice (2007) - This film explores the less media-friendly side of the animal rescue efforts after Hurricane Katrina.

Forensics on Trial (2012) - There is a startling gap between the glamorous television world of CSI and the gritty reality of the forensic crime lab.  With few established scientific standards, no central oversight, and poor regulation of examiners, forensics in the U.S. is in a state of crisis.

Just Eat It.  A Food Waste Story – (2014) – Filmmakers and food lovers Jen and Grant dive into the issue from farm, through retail all the way to the back of their own fridge.  After catching a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food that is tossed each year in North America, they pledge to quit grocery shopping cold turkey and survive only on foods that would otherwise be thrown away. 

First Civilizations – (Cities) (2018) - View the birthplace of civilization.  The Middle East, site of the world’s first villages, towns and cities from the hills of Turkey to the plains of Iraq.  They were crucibles of invention and innovation turbo-charging the face of progress.

Civilizations – (Encounters) (2018) – How advances in sea faring and a thirst for trade and exploration sent human beings around the planet.  Distant and disparate cultures met for the first time and art became the great interface by which civilizations understood each other.  Narrated by Liev Schrieber.

The Tesla Files (Without A Trace) (2018) – Series premiere researcher Mark Seifer recruits astrophysicist Travis Taylor.

My Bionic Pet (2014) - We've come a long way in terms of our relationships with animals.  We've gone from being their owners to being their guardians and in some cases even making them part of our families.  Today, we are taking the next step, as animals suffering from serious disfigurements or disabilities are being fitted with prosthetic devices.

Ancient Aliens (2018).  In 2017, it was revealed that the Department of Defense recently spent millions investigating reports of UFOs.  This 2-hour season premiere is the latest disclosure about a series of secret government UFO projects dating back decades, but many of their findings have never been released to the public.  Could the truth about an extraterrestrial presence on Earth be part of a UFO Conspiracy?

Decoding The Weather (2018) - Joint scientists on a quest to better comprehend the workings of the weather and climate change.  For NOVA.

Open Sesame/Story of Seeds (2014) - The importance of seed biodiversity is detailed in this documentary.  "A seed is the foundation of life".

Vikings Unearthed (2016) - While infamous for their fearsome conquests, the Vikings were also expert seafarers, skilled traders, and courageous explorers who traveled far and wide from Scandinavia to Europe and into Asia.  The 1960s discovery of the only Viking site in North America, on the northernmost tip of Newfoundland, proved that the Norse had actually made it to America as suggested in the Vinland sagas.  But how far did they get?  For PBS and NOVA.

Origins of Stonehenge (2018) - Josh travels to his ancestral home of Great Britain to explore the origins of Stonehenge finding an unexpected network of  monuments that could have inspired its mystical location.

The Vikings:  Dark Warriors (2006-2008) - The Vikings Dark Warriors from History is a wild and unforgettable journey across land and sea revealing dark Viking secrets along the way.  Included: the Vikings Voyage to America, Leif Erickson: Voyages of a Viking and Viking Underground.

The Great Math Mystery (2015) - Exploring math's power across the centuries, from the first wireless radio transmissions to the landing of rovers on Mars. for NOVA.

Roman Catacomb Mystery (2014) – An investigation of a mass grave found in the catacombs beneath the streets of Rome sheds insight into ancient Romans’ daily lives and health.  Included: who the buried people may have been, why so many were interred in one place and what killed them.  

Impossible Builds – (2018) – A look at a creation of some of the most ambitious and technologically advanced buildings.  As one of Dame Zaha Hadid's final projects, One Thousand Museum Tower in Miami which topped out in February of this year, Impossible Builds documents its construction.  Described by the show as "one of the most complex skyscrapers ever to make it off the drawing board," the 62-story tower features a unique glass fiber reinforced concrete exoskeleton – a system never before seen at this scale.

Norway: Quest for the Viking Spirit (2009) - A visit to Norway to examine its Viking heritage.  Included are: Oslo, Alta, Kirkenes and Lofotr and a sailing adventure off the western coast.  A Richard Bangs' Adventure with A Purpose.

The Tunnels of Okinawa (2016) - The series about WWII begins with a look at the defensive lines, bunkers and fortifications the Japanese built on the island of Okinawa.

Wasted - The Story of Food Waste (2018) - Renown chefs discuss the economic and environmental costs of global food waste and explore solutions that involve educating consumers and food suppliers.

Vermeer, Beyond Time (2017) - Steve Martin narrates a look at the life and work of 17th century Johannes Vermeer.  For PBS.

Great Escape at Dunkirk (2018) – Archaeologists and divers recover remains of ships and planes lost during WWII’s epic Dunkirk operation.  Included: evidence of the ingenious technology that helped save allied forces from defeat from the encircling Germans.  For NOVA.

Beyond the Infinite (Kubrick's Odyssey II - Secrets Hidden in the films of Stanley Kubrick) (2012) - In this deeply provocative examination of Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey, filmmaker and researcher Jay Weidner reveals that besides being a great science fiction move, 2001 is also a multi-layered revelation concerning the human condition and our place in the universe.

David Bowie Serious Moonlight (1981-2006) - Filmed live at the Pacific National Exhibition Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C. Canada in 1983 with extras including the Ricochet Documentary on Hong Kong, Singapore and Bangkok (a film featuring the Far East segment of the Serious Moonlight tour.

From Straight to Bizarre – Zappa, Beefheart, Alice Cooper and LA’s Lunatic Fringe (2011) – Desperate to remove himself from his original deal with Verve Records in 1968, Frank Zappa set up the Bizarre and Straight labels in league with manager Herb Cohen, and so began a string of releases which remain extraordinary in the extreme.

Pink Floyd - 1971 A period of Transition (2014) - Having released their first record in 1967 when Syd Barrett was chief composer in the ranks, Pink Floyd followed this generally praised work with a move towards prog-rock experimentalism and after Barrett agreed to leave the band before the release of their sophomore album, the group - now with Dave Gilmour filling in the hold Syd's departure had created - released a couple of records which even the band themselves were somewhat less than happy with.

Earth Flight (2014) - David Tennant narrates this exhilarating adventure filmed over four years with help from camera-carrying birds, drones, paragliders and remote control micro-flight planes. Feel your heart pound as you scramble with snow geese to escape the talons of a bald eagle over North America.  Glide with cranes over Venice and the white cliffs of Dover, among others.  This wondrous aerial spectacle will make your spirits soar!
